A large number of bicycle accidents are caused by motor vehicle operators who either fail to properly share the road with a cyclist, cannot see a cyclist, do not give the bicyclist the right of way, or one of many other driving errors. Not all bicycle accidents, however, are the result of the motor vehicle operator. There are unfortunately some bicycle accidents that are caused because the rider has not mastered the necessary skills to safely travels on the road and around other vehicles. This article will review some of the required steps that bicyclists should make sure to master before going on the road.
Skill # 1 – Controlling Your Speed

When traveling in areas of the city, traffic lights can pop up suddenly. As a result, it is critical for riders to know how to control your bicycle’s speed so that you can stop unexpectedly. This skill is particularly important when traveling in urban areas that have many stop signs as well as to avoid obstacles that can arise quickly and lead to serious accidents if a bicyclist does not respond appropriately. While the front brake on most bicycles is located on the left side of the handlebars, the right side of the brake is located on the right side of the handlebars. While the front brake can stop more suddenly then the rear brake, using the front brake too forcefully can result in abrupt stops that send bicyclists tumbling off a bicycle. Instead, it is a better idea in most situations that do not require immediate braking to use both brakes evenly when stopping.
Skill # 2 – Driving in a Straight Line
Many bicyclists enjoy weaving and it can particularly tempt to do so when riding through crowds or groups of vehicles. Bicyclists, however, should often travel in a straight line to avoid suddenly coming into contact with another vehicle operator and ending up in an accident. As a result, it is critical for all bicyclists to know how to travel in a straight line, which is particularly critical when continuing after a stop.
Skill # 3 – Look Back Without Stumbling
While it might seem like a simple maneuver, for some people, it is difficult to look behind them while riding a bicycle without toppling over. If a bicyclist is traveling on crowded roads, however, it can be important to be able to look behind your bike to determine if there are any approaching hazards.
Skill # 4 – Pedaling
Pedaling in a smooth and consistent manner, rather than erratically, can be safer when on the road. Pedaling and speed go hand-in-hand, as does know how to adjust your gears accordingly depending upon terrain and road grade.
